In July 2004 the various pilgrimage routes of the Kumano Kodo were registered by UNESCO World Heritage as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range." In 1996 I had trekked the Nakahechi or Imperial route from Tanabe to the Grand Shrine of Kumano Hongu Taisha and the bussed and trained to the Grand Shrines of Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha to complete the Kumano Sanzan. This short story desribes something of the nature and experiences that one can find there.
